Esta Lucecita is a non-profit organization formed to support the wellness and health education of the people in Iquitos, Peru and surrounding communities. We partner with local organizations and health care providers to deliver relief medical care to underserved areas in this diverse and beautiful region of our world. Our goal is to provide financial and professional resources to the local Peruvian Medical Team for long term growth and development.
The primary mission of Esta Lucecita is to provide free relief medical care to underserved and impoverished people in the Amazon region of northern Peru, in cooperation with the Peruvian government and the local healthcare Diresa.
Several times each year, American teams, comprised of medical professionals and support personnel, travel to Peru to provide financial and hands-on support alongside the local Peruvian Medical Team Clinics consisting of medical and dental care, disease prevention education and spiritual care. We provide free medication and vitamins and other self-care supplies including toothbrushes and reading glasses. We are hoping to continue to expand the services we provide.
Trips are usually scheduled for 6-7 days with 2-3 additional days for travel. Teams are based out of Mission Evangelica Pentecostal Independente Bible School in the city of Iquitos. Accommodations are dorm-style and all meals are included. Translators are available at all times to help with communication. Relief clinics are held within the city and surrounding villages along the Amazon, Itaya and Nanay Rivers. Teams travel to and from the clinics by open air buses, motor cars and small boats. Team members are encouraged to be prepared for all kinds of weather and last-minute changes.
In the time between international trips, we work to supply funding to the local team so they can continue to provide much needed care to those in need. The Peruvian Medical team, lead by nurse Hursula Maytahuari, are committed to providing relief care clinics on a regular basis throughout the year. Many of the local health care providers donate their time to serve their community.
